No, not the pasta - these little guys!

Easily distinguished by their yellow coloured crest, these penguins got their name from the early English explorers. In the mid-18th century, a young man who wore flashy feathers in his hat was called a "Macaroni" (remember the "Yankee Doodle" song?), and the yellow feathers of these penguins reminded English explorers of these fancy young men.

Sadly, these Antarctic penguins have experienced a drastic decrease in numbers in the past few decades due to irresponsible fishing activities and climate change, and they are currently classified as 'vulnerable'. Currently, the Antarctic Treaty makes it illegal to hunt, harm or interfere in any way with a penguin or its eggs.

Let's keep it that way!
